Los Angeles Superior Court Seriously Destabilzed By Recent Court of Appeal Ruling

Posted by Kevin Norte at 8:50 am .

Los Angles Superior Court Judges take a huge salary hit in a ruling Frinday from the Court of Appeal.  It may lead to a higher attriation rate and an unablity to attract and retain the most qualified bench officers.

“Thus the practice of the County of Los Angeles (the county) of
providing Los Angeles County superior court judges with employment
benefits, in addition to the compensation prescribed by the Legislature,
is not permissible. Accordingly, we must reverse an order granting
summary judgment in favor of the county in an action brought by a
taxpayer who challenged the validity of the benefits the county provides
to its superior court judges…”

How much is at issue?

“In sum, in addition to the salary, benefits and retirement prescribed
by the

Legislature, in fiscal year 2007 each superior court judge in Los
Angeles
was eligible to

receive $46,436 in benefits from the county. This amount represented
approximately 27

percent of their prescribed salary and cost the county approximately $21
million in fiscal

2007.”

Court finds law discriminates by limiting marriage to heterosexual couples

HARTFORD, Connecticut - Connecticut’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making that state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions.

The divided court ruled 4-3 that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the state constitution, and Connecticut’s civil unions law does not provide those couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples. (more…)
