Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger & Views on the 2007 Budget Stalemate

SealMarieThe California Recovery Team Advisory Council Members and Friends of Governor Schwarzenegger had a conference call set for 4:00 PM PDT (08.15.07) but the Governor was running late because he was (still as I write this, “is”) in budget negotiations.  At 5 minutes after we were informed that he was (is) running 15 minutes late because of the negotiations and to call back at 4:15.

Before I call back, I’d like to offer my comments on the current stalemate.  I apprecaite the efforts of Governor Schwarzenegger has made to hold the line on spending and to balance the budget in difficult circumstances.  As a member of Log Cabin Republicans, I can emphasize with the Governor’s difficulties in trying to hold true to your values while dealing with those in the Party who disagree with something so fundamentally important to you.  It is not an easy job and he will not please everyone but he is doing his job and in my opinion a good job. And you know what, in talking with Sacramento insiders who used to work for former Governor Davis, Schwarzenegger is much better (and this comes from a “D”) in managing the job of governing the state.  Now, back to waiting.

At approximately 4:22 John Hodgkis i(sp?) ntroduced the Governor.  The Governor praised the assembly for its version for a budget that started with a $1.4 B deficit then was eventually reduced to  a $700 M deficit.  The Republicans in the Senate want a 0 deficit.  The governor has promised a 0 deficit by using his VETO power to reduce the deficit to zero.

The budget Schwarzenegger wants (and will probably get), has the highest revenues ever (even though it is less than he wanted), fully funds education, fully funds law enforcement, does not call for any new taxes, and even has a reserve built in (I did not get the numbers-sorry).

From the Governor’s posiiton, he does not see why we cannot have a budget now.  The only sticking point, if i hear correctly, concernns issues with the intrastructure bonds.  Schwarzenegger was meeting with Peretta and Ackerman on this.  It seems the “D”s and the Governor see it as a non-budget item while the “R”s in the Senate see it as a budget item.  The Governor’s position, from my view, was that we should pass the budget now so that we can pay the vendors and people who depend on the state and deal with the non-budget intrastructure item later.

Schwarzenegger is very concerned about how the deadlock is effecting the elderly with regard to their care and payment to persons who provide care for them.  The Governor wants the legislature to tackel the real issues such as health care reform, provide clean and adequate water for our future, and redistricting.

Schwarzenegger is hoping for a budget by Monday.  He believes that with the “ZERO” deficit thanks to his veto power, his budget is in line with core Republican beliefs.

When questioned about how fast the state government will get back in business once the budget is passed, the Governor responded as soon as possible and emphasized  the non payment is hurting the elderly and handicapped who rely on government funds.  Schwrzenegger commented that the legislature should get out of Sacramento and travel the state like he does and they would see the impact they are having first hand and then maybe they would not delay as long as they do.

From what I took away, he believes that the sooner we get a budget, the faster we can work on the looming water issues (dare I say CRISIS?), health care, redistricting, and even restructuring the lottery.  The Governor commented that he would not support reforming term limits if it is not ited to redistricting 9if i understood him corrrectly).

On a question about AB 32 and water and land developemnt, he commented that Attorney General Jerry Brown means well but that we have to all work together in a cohesive way to make our future better economically and environmentally by making sure that every all of the states agencies and departments are on the same page (including airports).  He envisions reducing greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2020.

The conference ended about a half an hour later.  He talked more than I wrote about and the above are only highlights.

I wish him and all Californians well.

Go To Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood To Find OUT If “Gays For Giuliani” Site Is Legit

The Los Angles Times On-Line Edition is reporting that  YOUTUBE has ”added a bit of uncertainty. For instance, is this “Gays for Giuliani” ad a true pro-Rudy piece or anti-Giuliani subterfuge — a reminder to social conservatives about Mayor Giuliani before he became Candidate Giuliani? As TechPresident.com points out, citing video maker[HUFFINGTON POST BLOGGER] Ryan Davis’ MySpace page, the ad is pretty subversive in the ‘we report, you decide’. . .”

HELLO!  Is anyone reporting the REAL story about “Gays For Giuliani”?  Any intelligent blogger can easily trace who is behind it. The web site referenced at the end of the YOUTUBE clearly states it is by www.gaysforgiuliani.com.  True, it is an inactive web site but it is registered, according to public records on WHOIS as being registered to HUFFINGTON POST BLOGGER Michael Rogers.  The address is public.  Mr Rogers is the publisher of Page One News and the email that is registered for the site is pageonenews@gmail.com , so I am sure it is the same Mr. Rogers.

On April 4, 2007, Mr. Rogers blogged, “Are you a self-loathing gay man who wants to side with President Bush. . .

LCR

The posts title says it all.”

For those who can’t read it, its a flyer from the LCR Convention in Denver’07.  The class was entitled, “So You Want To Run For Office.”  My partner of 29 years was in attendance at that meeting and I was in attendance at a round table discussion.  LCR did not endorse Bush in 2004.   Mr. Rogers knows that.

The LA Times MISSED the REAL STORY.

I am offended by Mr. Rogers and I am certainly glad that I do not live in “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

DOPEY Polls Forget To Take Log Cabin Republicans Into Account

New DOPEY polls show that in the key Electoral College states the endorsement of gay rights groups hurts a candidate much more than it helps???

DopeyThe Quinnipiac University polls of voters in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania — the big three Electoral College swing states — found voters by large margins more likely to see the endorsement of a gay rights group as a reason to vote against, rather than for, a candidate.   But the DOPEY polls never took into account that Log Cabin Repubicans will most certainly endorse a republican candadate in 2008.

The Dopey Polls focused on independent voters — often the key to winning these critical states — and much more so among men than women and Republicans than Democrats.  But the poll is meaningless and myopic because the data is flawed since it never took LCR into account and we’re here and we’re [OK I won’t use THAT word out of respect for some of my elders.]

HATE CRIME OR NO?

Judge: Victim’s homosexuality enough to seek higher penalty

A judge in New York has ruled evidence of “hatred” is unnecessary for a prosecutor to pursue a “hate crimes” case against three men arrested for the death of a homosexual man.

The written ruling came from Judge Jill Konviser of the State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, and concluded prosecutors only need to show that the man, who was beaten and then hit by a vehicle in a robbery attempt, was picked because of his sexual orientation, according to a report in the New York Times.  The judge said that is enough for prosecutors to seek enhanced penalties for the defendants, if convicted, under the state’s Hate Crimes Act of 2000.

The newspaper report said the case involves the death of Michael Sandy, 29, who allegedly was lured to a meeting place where he was abducted. He then was taken to another location, beaten, and when he tried to flee was chased into traffic. He died of his injuries after being struck by a car. Prosecutors said the three defendants, Anthony Fortunato, 21, Ilya Shurov, 21, and John Fox, 20, found Sandy through a homosexual online chat room. Court documents allege they picked him because “this was an easy way to rob someone.”

But when they were charged with murder as a hate crime, defense lawyers argued the law was unconstitutionally vague and didn’t fit their clients’ actions. Defense lawyer Gerald Di Chiara said lawmakers who wrote the Hate Crimes Act wanted the statute applied only to cases where hate actually was involved. He quoted a state Senate memo about a law “designed to ensure that only those who truly are motivated by invidious hatred are prosecuted for committing hate crimes.”

But Seth Liebeman, senior appellate counsel to the Brooklyn district attorney, noted the suspects “chose to go to a gay Web site, and there was a particular remark made by one of the defendants that this was an easy way to rob people.” Konviser rejected the defense arguments.

“This is a case where the defendants deliberately set out to commit a violent crime against a man whom they intentionally selected because of his sexual orientation,” she wrote. “Thus, the hate crimes charges in this case are consistent with the intent of the Legislature.” The state’s minimum sentence for a murder conviction is 15 years to life, but that rises to 20 years to life under the enhanced hate crimes designation.

Court records allege the three selected a homosexual because they believed he would be unlikely to offer resistance. The men, in a deposition, said they didn’t beat up the victim because he is homosexual. But they did say that’s how they chose him as a victim. That counts as a hate crime, Konviser ruled.

COMMENT:

In this case I agree with defense - this is not a hate crime; it was not motivated by moral outrage and did not intend to send a message; it caused no “chilling effect” on the gay population in regards to orientation in general (just a caution to those careless about casual meetings).

Desparate Housewives: Gays Move In, Will They Be Log Cabin Members???

Marc Cherry

(Marc Cherry and LCR’s James Vaughn at LCR Meeting in 2006)

There goes the neighborhood.  DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES creator Marc Cherry has disclosed that a gay couple will be moving into the neighborhood this fall.

The Wisteria Lane writer said: “We’re going to have the first male desperate housewives.”  Cherry added, “They will move into the old Applewhite house and one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Susan (Teri Hatcher). . .Susan wants to be so politically correct and show how open-minded she is, that she puts her foot in her mouth instantly and it goes downhill from there. I’m basing it a little bit on my relationship with my neighbors. . .We’ve just started writing the episodes, so I probably won’t start casting for another few weeks.”The season kicks off on September 30th and that episode has been filmed so look for the couple to move in during the November or February sweeps.

British pop singer Robbie Williams and soccer megastar David Beckham are reportedly set to lend some muscle when the new couple moves in.  The British pop singer and soccer megastar are reportedly set to help the gay couple move in and will play the new neighbors’ best friends, another gay couple.

At one of last year’s LCR-LA’s general meetings Marc Cherry was the guest speaker and our own Terry Hamilton asked Cherry when will some LCR members move on to Wisteria Lane.  I cannot remember Cherry’s exact response but I do remember a particular gleem in his eyes.  Look for more heads to turn on Wisteria Lane because I predict that the new neighbors will have more in common with Bree than just the fact that Bree’s son is gay.    I would not bet against Cherry in making the couple Log Cabin Republican members and have Andrew Van de Kamp, (Marcia Cross)’s rebellious teenage son rebell against his mom’s relationship with, God forbid, LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS.   Perhaps we can look forward to a LCR SPLASH Pool Party with “R”’s in Red TRUNKS and “D”s in Blue SPEEDOS.

Go to it Marc

Comments by Joint Chiefs Nominee Signal Important Shift on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Republican Senator Presses Mullen on Harmful Law(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans welcome recent comments by Joint Chiefs Chairman nominee Admiral Michael Mullen that Congress should look at whether the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law should be changed.

 Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)

During a Senate hearing yesterday, Republican Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) pressed Mullen on the growing concern that the loss of gay troops under the law is harming our nation’s security in the global war on terror.  Mullen said, “I really think it is for the American people to come forward, really through this body, to both debate that policy and make changes, if that’s appropriate.”

Mullen also noted that he would like Congress “to make its own decisions” about repealing the ban on openly gay and lesbian service members.

“This is a welcome change to the broken record of politicians saying that they are merely following military commanders on this issue,” said Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon.  “Admiral Mullen, our next Joint Chiefs Chairman, is encouraging Congress to take a look at the issue.  That is a very welcome remark—and one that finally acknowledges the reality that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is not a policy but a law that only Congress can change.”

“Log Cabin praises Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) for bringing this issue to these hearings,” said Sammon.  “Senator Collins is a common sense Republican who understands that our top priority should be our military readiness and having the most qualified armed forces.”

In her questioning, Collins said that she recently met with a retired admiral in Maine who “urged” her to press Mullen to re-examine the policy.  The Military Readiness Enhancement Act (H.R. 1246), a bill that would lift the ban on open service, now has 126 bi-partisan supporters in the U.S. House.
