On May 1, 2007, a march and rally entitled the “2007 Great American Boycott” (SOUNDS LIKE THE OLD U.S.S.R. to me or Havana, 2008) will take place in downtown Los Angeles. Estimates of participants range from 100,000 to 1,000,000. The LAPD, Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) have been planning for the event and are taking preparatory measures. It is anticipated that there will be some impact on employees who work in the civic center. At the present time, businesses have been advised as follows (please keep in mind that the following descriptions and times are both approximate and fluid; there may be other closures at various times not listed):Street closures are expected to begin at 5:00 a.m. These will occur at Judge John Aliso Street between Temple Street and 1st Street; and, Temple Street between Alameda Street and Los Angeles Street. No freeway off-ramp closures are expected until later in the morning. There will be no public bus service from Olive Street to Los Angeles Street and Temple Street to the Harbor Freeway (I-110).
Per the LADOT, “Traffic impacts in Downtown Los Angeles may be felt on any street within the area bounded by Cesar Chavez Avenue to the north, Alameda Street to the east, Washington Boulevard to the south and Flower Street to the west…many roadways in Downtown Los Angeles will be impacted for most of the day. It is impossible to predict either the actual participation level or the location where participants will choose to join the protest or demonstration.”
As the number of demonstrators increases, the area closed off will increase in size. More information on closures will be forthcoming closer to the event.
Marchers will start assembling around 8:30 a.m. at Olympic Boulevard and Broadway. The march route will lead north from the assembly area on Broadway to 1st Street, then east on 1st Street to City Hall south lawn. The marchers are expected to arrive at City Hall for a rally between 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. The rally is scheduled to conclude around 3:30 p.m. Traffic in the area will be affected until 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., approximately.
Supervisors will be working with employees to ensure appropriate staffing levels for May 1st. Employees are strongly encouraged to bring their lunches or eat in building cafeterias due to the anticipated street congestion.
