Luntz to GOP: Lay off the Gays

Saturday at the California Republican Party Spring Convention in San Jose, California, GOP pollster Frank Luntz spoke to a group of bloggers about framing issues in the State.
With anti-Arnold Activist Steve Frank to my left, I asked Luntz if he felt that putting Gay Marriage initiatives on the ballot was a winning strategy for Republicans.
Frank was coy in his response, stating that he’d rather the party be talking about immigration issues, but the message was clear–and it was the same as Steve Kinney, another pollster told the LA County GOP Executive Committee–bashing gays will win the party no votes.
“bashing gays will win the party no votes”
I don’t get where this is coming from. The data has shown time and time again that demonizing gays DOES bring out the party base. That’s specifically why Rove advised Bush to speak out several times about how gays must be specifically denied rights through an amendment to the US Constitution. Plus Arnold was advised to veto gay civil rights. There are dozens of other examples at the state level where politicians gained huge amounts of support by seperating themselves from the ‘fag-loving’ Democrats by speaking out against alternative lifestyles. We must not deny our GOP heritage and values.
